Don't Know Your Port Type? Here's How to Check in 60 Seconds

The most common source of confusion is not knowing whether your laptop has USB-C, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4. Here's how to tell:

USB-C A small oval-shaped port. Most modern laptops have at least one. Identified by the USB symbol (often with a lightning bolt). Supports data, charging, and on many laptops, video output.
Thunderbolt 3 Looks identical to USB-C but has a small lightning bolt icon printed next to the port. Found on many Dell XPS, HP EliteBook, Lenovo ThinkPad, and MacBook Pro models from 2016–2021.
Thunderbolt 4 Also looks like USB-C with a lightning bolt. Common on laptops from 2021 onwards. Offers faster speeds and more reliable multi-display support than Thunderbolt 3.
Proprietary Dock
Connector		 A rectangular port specific to older Dell, HP, and Lenovo business laptops. Not USB-C shaped. Common on older Latitude, EliteBook, and ThinkPad models.

How Many Monitors Can My Dock Support?

This depends on two things: your dock's video output capability, and your laptop's connection type. Here's a simple guide:

  • USB-C docks (without DisplayLink) - typically support 1 external monitor natively on most laptops.
  • USB-C docks (with DisplayLink chip, e.g. Targus DOCK180) - support 2 external monitors even on laptops that normally only support 1 via USB-C, including MacBook Air.
  • Thunderbolt 3 docks - support 2 external monitors at up to 4K resolution simultaneously.
  • Thunderbolt 4 docks - support 2 x 4K monitors or 1 x 8K monitors. Some models support 3 or 4 displays with daisy-chaining.
  • Proprietary docks (Dell E-Port, HP UltraSlim) - typically support 2 external monitors at up to 1080p or 1440p depending on the model.

Do I Need a USB-C Dock or a Thunderbolt Dock?

This is the question we receive most often - and the answer depends on your laptop and your use case.

Choose USB-C if... - Your laptop has standard USB-C ports (no lightning bolt icon)
- You need 1-2 monitors at 1080p or 1440p
- You want broad compatibility across multiple devices
- Budget is a priority
- USB-C docks are generally more affordable
Choose Thunderbolt if... - Your laptop has Thunderbolt 3 or 4 (lightning bolt icon on port)
- You need dual 4K monitors or 3+ screens
- You transfer large files regularly and need maximum data speeds (40Gbps)
- You use a MacBook Pro (Thunderbolt is native to Apple's M-series chip ecosystem)
